Course Outline

This program is offered in collaboration with the ‘American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute”. Widely recognized as the preeminent leader in hospitality certification, the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) certifies hospitality professionals in all facets of the hospitality, hotel and tourism industry.

The 12 course program + Coop is provided via classroom, computer assisted learning, tutoring and applicable activities (ie guest speakers, field trips). The curriculum and training methodology ensures graduates acquire the knowledge, skills and fundamental experience needed work successfully in a range of hospitality/ tourism careers.

Upon completing  all the requirements for graduation students will receive two Diplomas:

  • Hospitality Management Diploma from the College.
  • Hospitality Management Diploma from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA)
  • Certificate of Specialization for Rooms Division from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA)

Co-op Program

  • 72weeks/1440Hrs (Academic 48weeks/960Hrs, Co-op 24weeks/48Hrs)
  • 1 year of study visa (be able to work 20hrs a week) Co-op visa(be able to work 40hrs a week)

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this program will be prepared for a variety hospitality / tourism positions in a broad range of settings: for example, hotels, motels, resorts, restaurants, casinos, convention centres and cruise ships, tourism services and so forth.

Admission Requirements

  • 1) All applicants should be high school graduates or 18 years or older at the start of the applicant’s program or course.
  • 2) Applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language skills. The minimum level of English is IELTS 5 for the program, or equivalent.

Required Textbooks & Equipment

  • Text books used are outlined in the course outlines/ documentation.
  • No special equipment is needed.  
  • No special materials are needed for the course.

Program Duration

  • The 12 courses which make up the program are each 80 hours long  – total of 960 hrs./ 48 weeks).
  • The coop work experience placement is 480 hours /  24 weeks

Total: 1440 hours / 72 weeks

Delivery Methods & Instructional Methods

  • On-site classroom delivery + work experience placement
  • Classroom (Instructor Led) Guest speakers and field trips Materials and power point presentations are contained in the resources. There will also be teacher made materials and Canadian content presented when applicable/ required.
  • Contact Hours: Full time 20 hours per week.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

Upon completion of this program the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to apply the knowledge learnt as per the course objectives.

The objectives / outcomes  of this program is to prepare students fora variety of hospitality  positions in a broad range of related employment settings; for example, hotels, motels, resorts, restaurants, convention centres, cruise ships, general toursim services.

Student Progress/ Assessment Methods

Formative assessments are used throughout the courses (related activities, quizzes etc).   Class Assignments and Participation will be determined by the Hospitality Instructor and may include interim tests, presentations, case study reports, individual (or group) projects, etc.  A meaningful written progress report will be provided to the student by the 30% point of their program.

Students will be required to pass an external exam ( must achieve a pass of at least 70%) administered by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA)

Attendance & Dress Expectations

  • Students are expected to maintain an attendance rate of at least 80%. Students who do not maintain an attendance average of at least 80% during the semester may not be permitted to write final exam.
  • No special uniforms are required. Students are expected to dress in clean, conservative, and generally casual attire.

Graduation Requirements

Student must complete each course.  Students will be required to pass an external exam (achieving at least 70%) administered by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA).  

Students must achieve ‘competency’ for each criteria set out in the work placement evaluation.

No letter grade is provided for the courses or program.  Transcripts indicate ‘pass’ for courses and ‘competency’ for work experience.
