Program Outline

Nail technology refers to the techniques, tools, and other products used to treat and take care of nails, while also making them look aesthetically pleasing. This field involves cosmetic beauty treatments for fingernails, hands, toenails, and feet.

The program will allow students to gain the theoretical knowledge and practice area skills to provide nail technology services.

The program consists of one course. The modules contained in the course consist of learning theory and practice area skills relevant to nails. The course includes 108 hours of in-class education (theory and practice areas) which is covered in 12 weeks.

One Course:  “Nail Technology” (four modules)

 12 weeks 108 hrs
Module 1: Orientation 6 Hours
Module 2: General Sciences 15 Hours
Module 3: Nail Care 81 Hours
Module 4: Business Skills 6 Hours

 

Total instructional hours:  108 hours.

Career Opportunities

  • Graduates could apply the skills and certificate to work in a nail salon, spa, cruise ships, private business and so on.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Graduation or equivalent; or 19 years of age.
  • Language requirement:  Evidence of IELTS 4 (or equivalent); alternatively the student has studied at a regular school where English is the language of instruction (min grade 9); alternatively the student can passthe Collge’s ESL placement assessment which could include an interview.

Required equipment, textbooks, and other materials

  • Milady’s Standard Nail Technology– 7th Edition, (2015), Cengage Learning, Milady.
  • All learning materials will be provided by the Royal Metro College.
  • Student supplies needed:
    1. Binders with dividers
    2. Loose leaf paper
    3. Pencils /Pens/Highlighters
    4. If needed an English/native language pocket dictionary (electronic is acceptable)

Program Duration Instructional hours: 108 hours over 12 weeks, The courses consist of learning theory and practice area skills designed to address the program/ course outcomes.
Homework Hours 2hrs / week
Delivery Methods On-site delivery / classroom instruction.
Instructional Methods The program is Classroom Instructor led and includes lectures, demonstrations, practice area supervision and feedback.

The program is comprised of one course.  See course outline for details. Students are taught the knowledge contained in the related (theory) chapters of the main text book used in the course.  A significant part of the program is learning and practicing the skills needed for nail technology. As such there are opportunities to practice the skills as needed.  

The course has both formative and summative assessments.

  • Final Practice Test                                        25%

 

Students need to achieve at least 70% to pass the course.  

Grade Criteria
A Student has achieved an overall percentage of at least 90%
B Student has achieved an overall percentage of at least 80%.
C (pass) Student has achieved an overall percentage of at least 70%.
DNC Did not complete course requirements.

 

By the 30% point of their program, students will receive meaningful written feedback based on relevant criteria – attendance, participation, assessments etc.

Students need to pass each course with no less than a “C’ grade.  

Attendance & Dress Expectations

Attendance in classes is necessary and missing classes can affect student learning. The number of absences should not exceed 20% (excluding school breaks).   Please refer to school policy manual for more information.

There is no dress code other than neat and tidy attire, relevant to working in a spa.

Students need to have completed all aspects of the program. See assessment above.
